BIRMINGHAM ART ASSOCIATION GALLERY. Regions Harbert Plaza lobby.

The Birmingham Art Association is celebrating its 100th birthday this year as the oldest continuously functioning art group in the area.

Beyond simply surviving, the age of any organization is a fair indicator that something right and good has been happening. The association continues to serve a basic need for aspiring and accomplished artists. Its ability to establish a permanent gallery in one of the classier venues in downtown Birmingham indicates not just survival but success.

The current show is a selection of works by members of the association that will be on display for three months. Because the membership includes individuals who can be ranked from amateurs and dabblers to welltrained and gifted artists, it is important that the gallery employs some selectivity to assure that the highest quality of work available from its membership will be presented.

Jose Ortiz's photographs are handsome works that at times appear to be watercolor paintings. The colors are subdued and the imagery subtly realized. The paintings by John Knowles range from a sort of lyrical cubism to atmospheric realism.

Arthur Umlauf is an accomplished sculptor who carves figures in wood. He defines emerging forms that articulate descriptive features in a rather soft, romantic way.

Jeff Faulk's allegorical figure, Fire and Water, is a fanciful derivation of Italian futurism, and Craig Reynolds' charming little scenes show the influence of early post-impressionism. Jane Branscomb displays a refreshing astringent landscape and Craig Calloway paints a tour-de-force vision of textured rocks. The ballpoint drawings by Don Stewart are always complex and fascinating images. Also on display are elegant stained glass and lead panels and a selection of handmade costume jewelry.

This gallery provides a great deal of information about the art scene in Birmingham that includes publications, flyers and other printed materials.
